Information about locking in or Pre-buying your oil:
An educated consumer is our best customer. The United States is on the verge of becoming the number one producer of oil in the world. Despite the talk of the press demand is down and production is up. If you lock in your price and the market drops out, you will be stuck paying a higher price for your heating oil. Sixty percent of the price of oil is from speculation, not actual use. If you sign a lock in or pre-buy contract you must first be absolutely sure you are dealing with a company who covers those bets, in that they actually execute a contract with a supplier to cover your oil. Also know that if oil drops you are stuck at the fixed price you locked in at or pre-bought. We continue to recommend caps. A cap contract will top off your price, you can never go higher than the cap price, but if the price of oil goes down you pay the lower price. We will have our caps out shortly. We highly recommend as a benefit to our customers that you do not lock your price of oil. Locks historically have made our industry look bad and do not do the customers any favors! Locked in oil prices are no different than buying stock at a fixed price, it can go up or down, you are taking a gamble that the oil will rise. A cap tops the price of your heating oil, this policy that if the price of oil rises, you will be covered and will not pay the higher price than the cap but if oil goes down you pay the lower price.
